R.010: Self mastery & Refinement
(Shot by Cooper Rich)
Again and again!
This is all I’ve known in my days of becoming the artist I am today let alone the man that’s standing in front of you. Either I spent years in search of self (artistic identity) or I’ve spent years trying to master the very things I’m passionate about.
I self reflect often… that’s apart of self refinement in my eyes. I’ve shedded parts of myself and transformed every single time causing me to grow in ways many couldn’t even imagine. First five years of my music career was me in search of identity, the sound that would shape me today as I grow and move forward. Now I’m in the phase where I’m trying to master every skill set to its ultimate degree (in my own way).
I admire many great artists before us especially when it comes to classical black music. Whether we talk about Roc Marci and his relationship to mastering his craft or someone like Prince that worked in creative overdrive… Miles Davis, Coltrane even Leonardo Davinci a man of many talents focused on mastery. Jazz Musicians and soul singers aged gracefully while simultaneously getting better because mastery mattered more than anything.
My time is limited to B.S for that very reason, not chasing perfection but I care about something so much I’ve devoted my life to being the best me. One takes were cool and first verses are still great but I always try to go further… these days I’ll write 2-3 times to a beat if I feel I can do better or just to see how crazy I can get. Many days at work researching and studying like a student from day one. I’ve been creating my whole life in every field; none of this is new - even in cinematography and video editing REFINEMENT is how I’ve developed style and got better.
I had a lot of fun in my earlier days but I think I see the light coming back full circle. A new path of evolution while in a space where I’m grounded in who I am… excited for upcoming releases.
As we step into April things will start moving… R.010:PHASE I
